What’s a longarm quilter?

A longarm quilter a.k.a. longarmer is a quilting professional who specializes in operating and maintaining an industrial longarm quilting machine. In addition to mastering quilting fundamentals, longarm quilters often have specialties that may include pattern curation for edge-to-edge quilting, designing or customizing digital patterns, hand-guided free-motion quilting, custom quilting layout design and planning, ruler work, and more.

Longarmers often offered what they call “quilters choice.” This option gives creative freedom to the longarm quilter to use their experience and expertise to select the thread and quilting pattern(s) to best suit the theme of your quilt. How Does Longarm Quilting Work?

  • Computerized Stitching: A key feature of longarm quilting is its automated computerized stitching. This technology ensures each stitch is uniform, creating a flawless finish across the quilt. Patterns are predetermined by the quilter, and the machine executes them with accuracy.
  • Edge-to-Edge Design: The quilt is stitched out one row at a time left-to-right then right-to-left in an edge-to-edge fashion, covering the entire surface with consistent, even stitches. Edge-to-edge quilting is the most economical option to have your quilt top quilted because it is significantly less labor intensive than custom quilting.
  • Free-Motion Quilting: The machine is hand-guided by the quilter to essentially draw on the quilt top with stitches

The Process Unraveled

  1. Loading the Quilt Layers: First, the quilter places the quilt’s backing, batting, and top layer onto the frame. This setup ensures that everything stays perfectly aligned during stitching.
  2. Choosing a Design: Here’s where creativity comes into play. A variety of patterns are programmed into the machine—everything from intricate florals to simple geometric shapes. The design is selected according to the quilter’s or customer’s preference.
  3. Computerized Stitching: The beauty of a longarm quilting machine lies in its precision. The built-in computer controls the needle’s movement, ensuring that each stitch is uniform and consistent, moving from edge to edge and left to right effortlessly.

Why Use Longarm Quilting?

  • Efficiency and Speed: Complete your quilts faster without compromising on quality or detail.
  • Physical Ease: Say goodbye to the physical demands of manual quilting. The machine handles the bulk of the work, allowing you to focus on the creative aspects, like thread selection and pattern choices.

This method is perfect for those who love designing quilts but find the actual stitching and assembly to be labor-intensive or time-consuming.

Benefits of Longarm Quilting

  • Speed and Efficiency: One of the biggest advantages is the significant time-saving aspect. Longarm machines allow you to complete quilts much faster than traditional hand-stitching.
  • Creative Freedom: By handling the physical stitching, using a longarm to finish your quilt frees your time to focus on doing the part you love–creating quilt tops. You can select fabric, choose thread types, and decide on intricate patterns without worrying about the actual sewing.

Longarm quilting blends technology with creativity, making the art of quilting more accessible and less labor-intensive. It’s a perfect solution for quilters who want to maintain artistic control while streamlining the production process.

Can Longarm Quilting Handle Large Quilt Sizes?

Absolutely, longarm quilting is designed precisely for tackling quilts of any size, including those large-scale projects that often challenge home sewers.

When it comes to creating expansive quilts, space and equipment can be major limitations. Traditional machines and setups may struggle with handling the weight and size of substantial materials. This is where longarm quilting excels.

Benefits of Longarm Quilting for Large Projects:

  • Ample Workspace: Longarm machines offer a vast working area, making it easier to manage large pieces of fabric without constant adjusting.
  • Efficient Handling: These machines are built to support the heft and volume of big quilts, aiding smooth handling and consistent stitching.
  • Creative Freedom: With longarm quilting, you have the liberty to select every detail—from fabric and thread to batting and decorative stitches—while skilled professionals execute your vision with precision.

Utilizing longarm quilting services shifts the physical challenge from you to the machine, allowing you to focus purely on the design elements that bring your quilt to life. Embrace those ambitious quilting dreams knowing that size is no longer a constraint.

How big is a longarm quilting machine?

Depending on the brand, a longarm quilting machine is approximately 5′ deep x 10′ wide. Frames come is different width options typically from 5′ – 14′ wide. Since you need to be able to walk behind the longarm, you will need 18 – 24″ between the wall so the front of the machine typically sits 72″ from the wall. I jokingly often say, having a longarm quilting machine in your home is like parking a small European truck in your living room. They are tricky to move once placed and have a lot of auxiliary storage needs to accommodate batting and tools.

Do you have to be a mechanic to run a longarm?

The answer is yes and no. If you live close to a dealer with good service you can possibly pay to have your machine tweaked. But to be proficient, yes a longarmer must be able to maintain their own machine.

Are all longarms built the same?

There are around a dozen longarm manufacturers but a few rise to the top. There are a lot of key factors that make or break the experience of quilting and its efficiency. After exhaustive research, we at Fat Stitch landed on two runners up for top picks, APQS and Innova. Both offer exceptional build quality and support, are built to last decades and made in USA! We could have flipped a coin, but in the end, the user-friendly interface of AutoPilot, less oil ports, and the frame setup for the Innova won us over. User-experience and USA-made are the top buying drivers for us when choosing our machines and software.
